Sims Recycling Solutions sets another record in Australia

15/Mar/2011

Sims Recycling Solutions in Villawood, Australia, conducted three simultaneous e-waste collection events for Auburn, Canada Bay and Penrith City Councils in the Greater Sydney area. SRS provided complete end-to-end project and operations management of the events, which attracted some 1600 car loads of e-waste.

The Auburn and Canada Bay events collected 11 metric tonnes and 13.5 metric tonnes respectively. However, Penrith City Council’s trial e-waste event attracted more than 1000 visitors with a contribution of 72.5 metric tonnes of e-waste in just six hours, bringing a record 97 metric tonnes in all.

Penrith’s Councillor, Greg Davies, said: “The community response was tremendous and I will be seeking Council support to repeat the event on a regular basis. The day was a huge success, with people lining up to responsibly get rid of old electrical items collected in their garages over many years.”

Penrith Council promoted the events in advance of the drop off day, while SRS was responsible for all other aspects including staffing, traffic control, risk and safety, logistics, security, contingency planning and site restoration.

Zoltan Sekula, SRS’ National Manager, Post Consumer Products said: “In the absence of e–waste legislation, we offer a total service package to all Councils wanting to manage demand for the responsible recycling of e-waste. However, these events would not be possible without the dedication and enthusiasm of our staff and contractors who worked in very hot conditions to manage the demand. Congratulations to everyone and special thanks for going the extra mile."

A national framework for Australia’s e-waste product stewardship scheme for the collection, transportation and recycling of electronic waste is expected by
September 2011.
